THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. It is also a fitting name for an ocean that more than anything else is shrouded in legends and myths.
Atlas was born there, according to the ancient Greeks. He lived outside Gibraltar, behind the far western horizon. Here he supported under the beams that kept heaven and earth apart until another god transformed him into the cliffs of the Atlas Mountains of North Africa named after him. Atlantis lay in the same sea, according to an Egyptian tradition quoted by Platon. And with Atlantis, the cradle of civilization sank into the sea.
According to Mexican mythology, Atztlan lay there, and when this land was destroyed by a flood, white and bearded men came across the sea from the east and mingled in their land with the primitive indigenous people there. Completely independent of each other, the Aztecs and Mayans built their sacred national history on the ancestors’ encounter with these white and bearded culture carriers who came across the Atlantic long before the Spaniards.
The Aztecs and Mayans had their own written history, which with their distinctive characters was written down in real paper books. We called them pagan savages and burned almost all of their books. But their inscriptions on pyramids and in stone have survived, and today we know that history meant more to these peoples than to the conquistadors.
The Mayans were astronomers and had a more accurate calendar than the Europeans. Their time calculation started from year zero which can be converted to August 12 in the year 3113 BC. For reasons we do not yet know, this time coincides with the same century the Hindu time calculation is based on. It is all the more strange, therefore, that it is estimated that the first dynasties in Egypt and Mesopotamia, respectively, were also founded 3100 years before Christ
